Survival Mandarin Chinese

Culture Yard‘s language school offers a four-part Mandarin Chinese language workshop set up for those who want to learn all the basic vocabulary for everyday situations, such as small talk, ordering food, shopping and transportation. Survival Chinese is held over two weekends, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and each session will cover a different topic. It is a great first step towards communicating with locals and feeling more confident when doing your daily errands.

Attend one or all of this series of 4 classes and you’ll know all the essential Mandarin Chinese vocabulary in and the dos & don’ts to survive in Beijing!

Our language study workshop is hosted by a foreign expert and is aimed at expats and travelers.

giulia survival chinese teacher culture yard Giulia: Italian native Giulia Falato has been in Beijing for two years, where she studied ‘Teaching Chinese as a Second Language’ at the Beijing Language and Culture University. She has worked as a translator since 2007 and has gained a lot of experience working with languages and different cultures. Giulia is also an Italian teacher at Peking University and is responsible for the external liaisons between Peking University, the Italian government and academic institutions. She has a good idea of what foreigners need to know when they first arrive in Beijing, which is why she is in charge of our weekly Survival Chinese Workshop. Giulia knows exactly how it feels to be a new comer in this crazy city and her workshop reflects that. She speaks Chinese, Italian, English and Spanish.

 

Classes are over two weeks, on Saturday and Sunday from  10:00 – 12:00, 8 hours of teaching over two weekends!

  • May sessions: May 12 and 13th & May 19th and 20th
  • June sessions: June 2nd and 3rd & June 9th and 10th

 1. Ordering food (Sunday May 20th, June 3rd) You would like to taste good and cheap Chinese food but you’re afraid of being misunderstood? Quickly learn the basic notions of Mandarin Chinese and discover real Chinese flavors with us!

2. Small talk (Saturday, May 12th, June 2ndWe’ll cover the basic vocabulary that will enable you to make small talk in different topics with your Chinese colleague, your neighbour, the taxi driver, your fellow travellers.

3. Transportation (Sunday, May 13th & Saturday June 9thWe’ll teach you how to ask for directions (and understand the answer!), give you tips on how to talk to a taxi driver and easily read maps and even some street signs.

4. Shopping (Saturday May 19th & Sunday June 10th) Come learn the words you need to use when you go grocery shopping or shopping for clothes.  Learn how to describe what you want or what you are trying to look for.
