Meet The Filmmaker film series at Culture Yard, Beijing

Culture Yard presents “Meet the Filmmaker”: get to know China’s film industry and its filmmakers during a meet-and-greet in our intimate Beijing hutong courtyard. This monthly event will take a close look at the pre- and post-production of a film and the story behind the camera. You will have the chance to watch the film together with our special guest, followed by a Q&A session. Our special guests include filmmakers, directors, producers, screen writers and experienced film critics.

Egg and Stone 鸡蛋与石头 (2012,97min)

The director creates a sensation by telling the private story of a girl who unwillingly becomes trapped in a life in the margins. The taboo present in the film is broken by means of poetic language. The director does so with a convincing author’s approach and sensitive direction of non-professional actors. The beautifully framed, conscious choice of camerawork is relevant to storytelling, and unveils human secrets.’
Egg and Stone saw its world premiere in the Tiger Awards Competition 2012 and was produced by Yellow-Green Pi (China).

Poetry and Disease 诗与病的旅程 (2011,93min)
Director: Geng Jun 耿军

Geng Jun’s beautiful creation follows the story of the poet, Zhang Xixi. Zhang Xixi studied in Beijing at the Academy of Fine Arts and decided to try and pursue an artistic career in the city. Due to the pressures of city life, he became depressed and then decided to return to his hometown to teach in a high school. There he developed schizophrenia, causing him to leave the school for rehabilitation. As winter turned to spring, he continued his journey through rehabilitation and to write and create poetry.

Red Light Revolution

A humorous look at Chinese tradition colliding with modern sexual values, RED LIGHT REVOLUTION is the story of an ordinary Beijinger who opens a sex shop to make ends meet, sparking a sexual revolution in his conservative neighborhood. Shunzi, like many men of his generation, is a hard worker who simply can’t afford to provide the type of life his spouse desires. When he is fired from his cab company, his wife promptly leaves him and throws him out of the house he bought her. With nowhere else to go, Shunzi returns to his parents’ traditional courtyard home for solace.As money pressures rise, Shunzi’s parents urge him to forget about “face” and take any job that will have him. So, unbeknownst to his family, Shunzi decides to step behind China’s new “red curtain” and secretly open an adult shop.But when the n
eighborhood watch discovers that Shunzi has been operating without a permit, Shunzi faces the threat of losing everything. Shunzi and his neighbours have a choice: accept defeat, or fight for the shop that has unexpectedly united the community.
